🌱 Benefits of Having an Individually Designed Curriculum in a Special Educational Needs (SEN) Provision.
An individually designed curriculum tailors learning to each child’s unique profile — their strengths, needs, and interests. This aligns with the SEND Code of Practice (2015), which emphasises a “person-centred approach” and “high aspirations and expectations for all children.”
Key Benefits
Personalised Learning
- The curriculum targets each student’s individual learning goals (often from their EHCP outcomes).
- Ensures pupils make meaningful progress — academic, social, emotional, or sensory — rather than being measured solely against age-related expectations.
Improved Engagement and Motivation
- When learning is linked to a pupil’s interests and real-life experiences, engagement and motivation increase.
- This reduces anxiety and behavioural challenges that can stem from frustration or irrelevance.
Supports Diverse Learning Styles and Needs
- Allows for multi-sensory teaching, flexible pacing and varied assessment methods (visual, kinaesthetic, verbal).
- Supports pupils with communication difficulties, ASD, dyslexia, ADHD, or physical disabilities more effectively.
Builds Confidence and Independence
- Tasks are designed to be achievable yet challenging.
- Promotes self-esteem and independence as pupils see themselves succeed and develop life skills.
Holistic Development
- Goes beyond academic attainment to include therapy, social communication, emotional regulation, sensory processing, and life skills — all key areas for many SEN pupils.
Better Family and Multi-Agency Involvement
- Parents, therapists, and teachers collaborate on an individual plan, ensuring coherence across home and school.
🌟 Positive Impact on Students
Ofsted's new 'So what' approach has resulted in deep dives into alternative education. Having been involved in many Ofsted inspections now, we are more than confident that our curriculum, care, policies and procedures are perfectly suited for these dives. The main talking points from these deep dives has been the relationship between the alternative education centre and the school. To help this, we stay in regular contact, create and share student termly target sheets, termly summary forms, safeguarding paperwork and attend any meetings such as annual reviews that we can help with. Students goals are designed by our SEMH specialist qualified teachers, all targets and goals are drawn from existing EHCPs or any other relevant paperwork along with information gathered from any other agencies or specialists involved. All this shows that even if the student is on a part time timetable with the school, we all have the best interests of the student in mind and are working together constantly to achieve tangible goals and reach targets.
